The set up of this house has been completely overwhelming. Going in, I knew how I wanted it styled and the furniture pieces I knew I wanted to buy. Buying all the furniture was the easiest part – spending the time to set up each room is taking forever. There just seems to be so much to do. I still have boxes upon boxes of stuff to unpack and go through. A big yard sale is in order which I plan to have next weekend. Maybe once I get rid of all the stuff I don’t need or don’t want, the house will be decluttered and feel much less overwhelming.
The dining room is probably the easiest space in the house to set up as it doesn’t require any organization of “stuff”. The only thing I feel like I’m missing in here at this point is some “life” – so I will be adding some plants to these white shelves. I’m still debating on the art pieces I want for the walls. The canvas you see below in the images is one that I’ve had for a while and I’m trying to decide if I like it in this space. If I do decide I like it, I still have to figure out what I’m putting on the opposite wall. I have this great canvas I bought that is a photo of Bansky’s “Life is Beautiful” mural. I purchased it specifically for this room, but now I’m starting to think I want to use it somewhere else.
My dining table is a Mid-Century Modern table that I found on Amazon. I looked at about 20 dining tables before settling on this one. I wanted a table with a bright white top and wooden legs, but was having trouble finding one that I liked that wasn’t a “farmhouse” style table. I finally decided that the simplicity of this one was what I was looking for. The table top is covered in a durable white lacquer and the legs are ash wood. For the chairs, I’ve had my heart set on some Eames style chair for several years now. This was simply a no-brainer. I found two sets that I wanted. The first set is a set of four Eiffel Style chairs with wooden legs and the second set of Eiffel Style with arms for a total of six chairs.
I wanted a buffet for the room but after placing the table, I decided that there wasn’t enough space to sit comfortably with another large piece of furniture in the room. The white shelves you see on the back wall are Ikea’s Vittsjo shelves. I also got these from Amazon because at the time I bought them, Amazon’s price was for two shelves which ended up being significantly cheaper than ordering them from Ikea. I bought these shelves for another space in the house, but after I realized I didn’t really have the room for a buffet, I still needed a storage space for some barware. The shelves ended up working perfectly for the space.
The curtains are Semi-Sheer Grommet Panels from Amazon. I really don’t like blinds on my windows because I feel like they do nothing other than gather dust. Curtains can easily be taken down and laundered – so much easier than dusting and cleaning blinds. I wanted sheer panels in the living spaces because I want the dining area, living area, and kitchen area to be flooded with natural light. These panels are very sheer and allow tons of light to diffuse through them even when closed. This helps with the glare from the sun coming in through the glass. They don’t actually provide much privacy so if that’s a concern for you, you may want a panel that is more opaque.
The light fixture in this room is one that the builder specified for the space. I didn’t change it when I picked out light fixtures because the lighting store didn’t have a fixture that I wanted in a price that I could afford. I’ve purchased a much more modern “Sputnik” style fixture that still hasn’t been hung. I don’t do any kind of electrical work, so I’ve been putting this off until I can get someone to help me with this project. I love the fixture though and can’t wait to get it in place. The one I bought from Amazon is the Modern Sputnik Chandelier with 18 lights. I will be using LED bulbs in an Edison style for this chandelier. The ones I bought are a cooler light than is typical of an Edison bulb. These bulbs have a 5000k color temperature. This is a very white light. If you aren’t a fan of this, I would recommend buying bulbs in a warmer color range.
