I have compiled a list of books that I own and have found to be very useful for cookie decorating. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced cookie decorator, I think you will find that these books will serve you well in your personal library.
If you are looking for a gift for a cookie decorator or someone who is interested in cookie decorating, you will find suitable book ideas here that your gift recipient will be delighted to have.
The Cookie Companion: A Decorator’s Guide by Georganne Bell
My current favorite book right now is The Cookie Companion by Georganne Bell – or as cookie decorators know her, LilaLoa. Georganne has been a cookie decorator for years and many of us began our journey into the cookie decorating world by reading her tutorials and learning from her from her website LilaLoa.com. Her website is still very active and contains a lot of tips, tricks, recipes, and cookie designs that you can look through for hours for inspiration and education.
She published this book a couple of years ago and I got my hands on a copy as soon as I could! Inside it contains everything a beginner cookie decorator needs to know. But even as an experienced cookie decorator, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and still use it for reference. My favorite part of the book is the icing coloring guide. I find these pages to be the perfect reference for mixing icing colors. Sometimes you have trouble getting the right color, and she has gone through the trouble of breaking down color formulas to get you going in the right direction.
She also has several pages of color palettes that you can use for inspiration. If you check out her blog, one thing you will notice is the amazing color combinations she comes up with. Every cookie set is gorgeous and is designed with perfectly coordinated color palettes.
If you check out the book on Amazon, you can preview several pages of the book including the icing color guide pages and the color palette pages.
This is the one book that I would tell anyone they need to have in their library.
Decorating Cookies: 60+ Designs for Holidays, Celebrations, and Everyday by Bridget Edwards
This book was my second cookie book purchase. It’s written by Bridget Edwards, who has also maintained the website Bakeat350.net for many, many years. Her website was another that I studied religiously when I started making cookies. She not only bakes cookies, but there are tons of other baked goods and treats with recipes and guides available on her website.
The book itself contains so many design ideas for cookie decorating. The designs are what I continue to look at for inspiration. The book also has plenty of information for beginner cookie decorators like supply lists, flooding techniques, hints, and other cookie basics. There are also several recipes you can choose from if you are bored with plain vanilla sugar cookies.
You will never get cookie designers block with this book – when you get stuck trying to figure out what design to use, pick up her book and thumb through the pages. If you can’t use one of the designs she has available in her book, you will certainly see something that will spark the creative energy in your brain and come up with something inspired by her cookies.
Cookie Art by Amber Spiegel
If you are looking for inspiration for the most elegant and classy cookies ever, there’s only one cookie decorator that you need to look to. Amber Spiegel has been making cookies for years and her signature style is always full of class and elegance. Her website Sweetambs.com has been the starting point for many cookie decorators. Her “brush embroidery” technique has been repeated and repeated in every iteration imaginable by beginner cookie decorators. It’s almost cliche at this point to do brush embroidery, but what other design would you go to as a beginner that is so easy to replicate and results in such beauty?!
Her book contains two parts. The first part is the cookie basics: how to make icing, how to flood cookies, how to do brush embroidery, how to, how to, how to…etc. This part of the book is what the beginner cookie decorator is looking for. The second part of the book is her impressive cookie designs. Page after page of gorgeous, intricately designed cookies that will have you drooling over their beauty. In addition, she includes several recipes for cookies and frosting.
Learn the brush embroidery, signature filigree, and more from Amber Spiegel with this book full of Cookie Art. And for more design inspiration, you can check out her YouTube channel at SweetAmbsCookies.
